The BRICS Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BRICS CCI) is delighted to announce the successful conclusion of the Round Table Discussion "BRICS+ in Focus," organized in collaboration with the Study Association for Political Science Students at Leiden University (SPIL), Netherlands. This special session was part of a two-week educational visit by 35 Dutch and international students from Leiden University to Delhi and Jaipur. These students, enrolled in the political science program, are keen to understand the economic dynamics and international cooperation facilitated by the BRICS nations.
The primary objective of this Round Table Discussion was to provide the students with an in-depth understanding of the BRICS CCI’s functions, the development of a BRICS currency, and other significant projects driving economic growth and integration among BRICS nations. The conference provided an overview of the history, mission, and objectives of BRICS CCI, including its organizational structure and key functions. The role of BRICS CCI within the BRICS framework in enhancing trade, investment, and economic cooperation was thoroughly discussed.
Dr. BBL Madhukar, Director General of BRICS CCI, opened the event by emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts. "Let us remember the importance of collaboration and the potential it holds for shaping a better future. The world is facing unprecedented challenges, and it is through our shared efforts and innovative thinking that we can find sustainable solutions," he stated.
The round table featured insightful contributions from esteemed speakers. Amb. Amrendra Khatua, former High Commissioner of India to Argentina and Ivory Coast, addressed the issues of de-dollarization and the creation of the BRICS currency. “Speaking of the BRICS currency, it is a mid to long-term goal. When the Euro came into being, people said that it might lead to de-dollarization. But we found a way to make it work. Similarly, in the case of the BRICS currency, we can work out a mechanism to coexist with other currencies without getting isolated from the world. As of now, the focus is on the use of national currencies for trade and reducing dependence on the US Dollar," he said.
Ms. Kalpana Sharma, Former Additional Secretary to Lok Sabha, Parliament of India, emphasized the importance of capacity building and educational exchange in the BRICS nations, saying, "Almost 3.5 billion people with about 50% of the youth population reside in the BRICS countries. Despite this, we have not seen the desired impact owing to the capacity gap in training and education. BRICS countries should come together to interact, communicate, and share resources to bridge this gap."
Amb. Anil Trigunayat, Former Ambassador to Jordan, Libya, and Malta, and Senior Advisor to BRICS CCI, provided a comprehensive overview of BRICS’s outlook towards the West. "The BRICS, as far as India is concerned, is not looking at the West in a conflicting manner. We may be non-Western in our approaches, but we are not anti-West," he noted.
Mr. Sameep Shastri, Vice Chairman of BRICS CCI, skillfully moderated the discussion, encouraging a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives. "For India, India is 1st. Whether it's G20 or BRICS, India will remain a neutral and cooperative ally to everyone," he emphasized.
Special remarks were provided by Mr. Ruhail Ranjan, Treasurer, BRICS CCI. "Our guests from Leiden University have brought a fresh and enthusiastic perspective to our discussions. The probing questions and keen interest from the students have sparked meaningful dialogue and provided new insights into the challenges and opportunities facing our nations," he said.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and valedictory address by Ms. Ankita Sachdev, Joint Director of BRICS CCI, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to all speakers and participants for their invaluable contributions. "Your insights and dedication to our shared goals are truly inspiring. Together, we can achieve remarkable progress," she stated, reiterating BRICS CCI's commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and action.
This important dialogue underscored the necessity of international collaboration in addressing global challenges. The insights and recommendations from this event will guide future initiatives aimed at promoting women's empowerment and sustainable development across BRICS nations.
